Inclusive Schools Week is back!
For the past two years, 143 schools have joined this powerful movement in Los Angeles to celebrate the unique strengths, talents, and contributions of children of all abilities.
This year’s powerful theme from Inclusive Schools Network is: “Children First.” It is rooted in the Maasai greeting, Casserian Engeri, which translates to “And how are the children?” This traditional greeting is rooted in the knowledge that when our children are well, our community is well.
Join us in creating inclusion activities and campaigns that reflect your school’s commitment to creating learning environments where all children belong…where all are seen, heard, and valued.
Create inclusion activities and events during the week of December 8th – 12th and share your best practices in inclusion! Here are some great ideas from Inclusive Schools Network:
- Create an inclusion committee at your school of students with and without disabilities! Let them help you design meaningful activities for the week.
- Watch a film on inclusive education and share as a group: https://www.unesco.org/archives/multimedia/document-213
- This film, by UNESCO, chronicles the 2006 Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (specifically education) and is a great jumping off point to explore advocacy globally.
- Using the prompt “I feel included when…”, have students write simple actions that make them feel included. From there, create a list of monthly actions or a short multi-media project that shows all students what they can do to create an environment of belonging!
Your Inclusive Schools Week celebration will reflect all your students, ensuring that all voices are heard, welcomed and honored.
