Cy Pres awards money from a settlement fund in a class action case (and sometimes other types of proceedings like probate) that are unclaimed or cannot be distributed to the class members or beneficiaries who were the intended recipients. Under the Cy Pres doctrine, federal and state law courts can distribute these residual funds to certain non-profit organizations.
