In 1998, with the seed of an idea about inclusive play for children with disabilities in Los Angeles, we threw our hat over the wall to see who would respond. The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks responded with an immediate yes. John Mukri, then General Manager of the Department, rallied his team to begin supporting what has become a 20-year relationship in inclusive play. Together, Inclusion Matters and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks have created 34 playgrounds and counting, reaching a diverse network of communities whose children with disabilities had never had a place to play.
The Department has dedicated time, resources, and passion to make Los Angeles the Most Playable City in the World for children with disabilities. They have rallied a wide variety of partners throughout our city to make this vision come to a reality. Today, under the leadership of Mike Schull, General Manager, the Department continues to hold this vision high and expand it. We are honored, humbled, and grateful to create more spaces where all children, whether they walk or roll, can come together and just be kids on their neighborhood playground.
Our mission, our journey, is possible because of the Department of Recreation and Parks.
